I think having a game plan for your business is essential.  Our experience has shown us that to be effective, the plan must have your core values, strengths, personality and goals in mind. It is built around a compelling vision for not only your business, but your life.  It takes all the pieces and puts them all together in a fluid fashion to allocate for life’s unexpected surprises but offers direction, strategies and tactics for arriving where you want to go.

As you look at your business, where do you invest your time, talent and treasure?  If you are in real estate for a year or two, invest in prospecting.  If you are in it for ten, invest in marketing.  If you are in for a lifetime, invest in people. Granted like any good investment portfolio, you should be diversified across all three areas, but where you put your bulk is determined by what your vision is.

It’s all about being Sticky

How do you talk to yourself?  No really, when no one else is around how do you find yourself communicating with the person in the mirror?  Do you wake up and great yourself with a celebratory round of applause or do you stumble into the bathroom rub your eyes and bemoan how the scale is not cooperating and it “looks like it’s going to be ‘one of those’ days?”

I won’t try and impress you with my extensive knowledge of Neuro-Linguistic Programming or the importance of the root word of “Logos” in the Original Greek Manuscripts of the New Testament.   What I will say, is that despite my understanding of how it works, I know that what we say and how we say it are really important.

I don’t pretend to understand the intricacies of the internal combustible engine of my car, but I have become fairly proficient at turning it on and getting to where I need to go.  Words and how we use them are just as important.  Now, please don’t hear me say you need to lie to yourself, that is delusional and they have medication for people who live in fantasy worlds.  But do hear me say that you need to really watch the negativity that is not constructive and productive.  Do hear me say that you need to see yourself in a better light.  Do hear me say that you, despite your faults, should be celebrated because, if nothing else, you bear the fingerprint of God.

Tomorrow set the alarm to go off with a CD full of applause, welcome yourself in the mirror and be thankful for another day, and relish every moment that you are alive.  Walk out your front door ready to Seize the Day and watch how your world will change for the better.

  It’s all about being Sticky

PictureTwo words: Sticky content.

Sticky content is information (web site content) that makes people stick around and return for more. Examples are how-to articles, tips and tricks, beginner’s guides, and any other free information that your clients and prospective clients would find of value.

Keep in mind that the more content you have, the stickier your site is. Sticky is good for at least three reasons: It gives your visitors a reason to come back again and again; it gives your visitors a reason to tell others about your site; and it demonstrates your expertise for people who are interested in your services.

With good content, you will be able to gather leads, acquire names for your mailing list, as well as offer good reasons for your visitors to tell their friends and colleagues about you.

True peace is calm within the storm.

Have you ever really looked at the pictures of a hurricane?  Or the 3-D modeling of a tornado?  In the very center, it is utterly calm.  In talking to people who have experienced and lived through some of the world’s worst storms, they all remember the calm.  The peaceful place of rest as all hell was breaking out around them.  The place they stepped into, or washed over them, in the midst of a living nightmare.

Some measure peace by the absence of external pressures.  Others choose to measure it by the reaction they have to the outside stresses and conflicts.  The first group is constantly tossed around by things they cannot control, and life becomes a quest for reducing the risk of pain and hurt.  The problem is all the things that are important in life require risk.  So to pursue peace long this path requires the withdrawal from the very things that bring us the greatest enjoyment and fulfillment.

Those that have peace internally can take it with them, regardless of what’s going on around them or where they are.

It’s Not About the Coffee

  It’s Not About the Coffee

I am a life-long learner and hold to the philosophy that I can learn something from everyone.  With that said, some books are better than others and every once in a while I come across a really great one.  It’s Not About the Coffee: Leadership Principles from a Life at Starbucks by Howard Behar is one of those books.  In fact, I would reccomend this book as one of the top 5 I have read this year. Howard Behar is not only the author of It’s Not About The Coffee: Leadership Principles from a Life at Starbucks. He is also the former president of Starbucks Coffee Company International. He started working at Starbucks in 1989 when the company had just begun to venture outside the Northwest region. Initially serving as vice president of sales and operations, he grew the retail business from 28 stores to more than 400 stores by the time he was named president of Starbucks Coffee International in 1995. Under Behar’s leadership, Starbucks opened its first location in Tokyo in 1996. Following this historic opening, over the next three years he introduced the Starbucks brand across Asia and the United Kingdom. After a two-year hiatus, he returned to Starbucks as President of Starbucks North America until his retirement in January 2003. He has been a director of the company since 1996.

Here’s a synopsis of the books fantastic points:

1. Know Who You Are: Wear One Hat

Our success is directly related to our clarity and honesty about who we are, who we’re not, where we want to go, and how we’re going to get there. When organizations are clear about their values, purpose, and goals, they find the energy and passion to do great things.

2. Know Why You’re Here: Do It Because It’s Right, Not Because It’s Right for Your Resume

The path to success comes from doing things for the right reasons. You can’t succeed if you don’t know what you’re trying to accomplish and without everyone being aligned with the goal. Look for purpose and passion in yourself and the people you lead. If they’re not there, do something.

3. Think Independently: The Person Who Sweeps the Floor Should Choose the Broom

People are not “assets,” they are human beings who have the capacity to achieve results beyond what is thought possible. We need to get rid of rules—real and imagined—and encourage the independent thinking of others and ourselves.

4. Build Trust: Care, like You Really Mean It

Caring is not a sign of weakness but rather a sign of strength, and it can’t be faked—within an organization, with the people we serve, or in the local or global community. Without trust and caring we’ll never know what could have been possible. Without freedom from fear, we can’t dream and we can’t reach our potential.

5. Listen for the Truth: The Walls Talk

Put the time into listening, even to what’s not said, and amazing results will follow. You’ll know what you’re customers want, you’ll know why the passion is missing from your organization, you’ll learn solutions to problems that have been sitting there waiting to be picked.

6. Be Accountable: Only the Truth Sounds like the Truth

No secrets, no lies of omission, no hedging and dodging. Take responsibility and say what needs to be said, with care and respect.

7. Take Action: Think like a Person of Action, and Act like a Person of Thought

Find the sweet spot of passion, purpose, and persistence. “It’s all about the people” isn’t an idea, it’s an action. Feel, think, do. Find the balance, but act.

8. Face Challenge: We Are Human Beings First

Use all the principles to guide you during the hardest times. If the challenge is too big, if you’re stuck, take smaller bites. But remember to put people first, and you’ll find the guidance you need.

9. Practice Leadership: The Big Noise and the Still, Small Voice

Leading can be the noisy, “I’m here!” kind of thing. But don’t ever forget that leaders are just ordinary human beings. Don’t let the noise crowd out the truth. Listen to your still, small voice. Let quiet be your guide.

10. Dare to Dream: Say “Yes,” the Most Powerful Word in the World

Big dreams mean big goals, big hopes, big joys. Say “yes” and enjoy all that you are doing, and help others to do the same.

Real estate collects re-treads.  Really, as you look around, how many people in your office grew up wanting to be a real estate professional when they got older?  We went to school for other things, we pursued other paths, and yet, we all find ourselves here.  How we got here is an interesting and different story for each person, but here we find ourselves.

I have found that life is more about what’s in front of you than what is behind you.  I’ve seen people rise above extraordinary circumstances in their past to go on to accomplish greatness.  I’ve seen those with all the privilege, prestige and advantage loose it all.  It’s even a phenomenon within the elite, where the first generation wealth is only lost in increasing speed with every subsequent generation to hold it.

When it comes to achievement, it pays to spend more time focusing on where you are going than looking back on where you’ve been.

Momentum = Mass x Velocity

When we think about momentum shifts in our businesses (and we have all experienced them), I am reminded of the equation for momentum.  The trick is translating it into a meaningful way for real estate.  If you want to increase momentum this next year to get bigger and better results, or if you need to shift momentum from the doldrums into achievement, think about mass and velocity.

I know too many agents who have gotten in a rut of busyness and lost sight of productivity within their day.  The hours tick by and the projects expand to fill the time, but the end of the day is met with frustration and the end of the month is met with disappointment.  Let’s apply the momentum = mass x velocity this week to change the tempo.

In real estate, mass is what you are going to do.  Whether it’s prospecting or marketing, lead generating ideas’ mass is equal to their effectiveness.  This business is a contact sport and the more people you connect and develop loyalty with the more “mass” the idea is going to have.  As a rule of thumb, I believe prospecting should be done based on your personality while marketing is framed around your core values and inherent strengths.

Once you have identified a lead generation project or mass, we need to turn our attention to velocity.  Velocity in real estate is all about how much time, talent and treasure you are going to dedicate to it within a short period of time.  I really do believe consistency will trump almost all other factors when it comes to marketing your business; however, there is a time and place for a push of dedicated effort.  The amplitude of your velocity will work in concert with the size and audacity of your lead generation idea to create a shift in momentum that generates a wave you can ride to reach your goals.
